About Translation within Wikimedia

There are thousands of multilingual editors in the WikiMedia community. Most spend all of their time on their own Wikis, oblivious to other communities. By the next press cycle in late August, we should be able to translate and distribute a press release across the world within a single day.

There is also a Translation practice course in the wikiversity: those who want to participate (translating or checking, there is need of both students and checkers) may go to the Spanish version or the English version.

How to Translate a Wikimedia article

To translate an article on Meta:, see . If you want to encourage translations into many languages at once, you can start by adding a multilingual sidebar like the one on this page. You may also list an article or quote below for translation into every wikipedia language.

To translate an article on Wikipedia, switch to the appropriate-language domain (e.g., fr.wikipedia.org for French) and create the translated page there; then add to both the original and the translated articles.

Translators by "A" language

Below is a list of available translators, ordered by their fluent languages. Help expand this list! Note how much time each translator has for translating. List people with multiple fluent languages separately under each fluent languages. (Fluent but not native-fluent speakers are marked with a *, and professional translators with a +)

Ratings by names follow the (ILR) scale, a 1-5 scale where 1 implies "elementary proficiency", 4 implies fluency ("full professional proficiency"), and 5 implies native/bilingual proficiency. Translators 2 or better in at least 4 languages are highlighted.   (See link above for details. Rankings from the en: list of translators were converted as follows: native-->5   near-native-->4+   fluent-->4   mostly fluent-->3   moderate-->2)

Translation Requests

(for translation into every language) For a broader audience, see single-lang pages : (fr), (en), etc. There is a backlog of requests for de-to-en and fr-to-en translations on the latter page.
  • Donation message (translations on individual wikis, at MediaWiki%3AFundraising notice): banner message (about donations) into as many languages as possible. 09:55, 14 Jul 2004 (UTC) Thanks to everyone who helped with this; it should not be needed again in the near future (and may appear, if at all, at the bottom of pages).
  • New upload form (translations): Elements on three new pages, to be used for image uploads, need translating. Mostly-finished translations in Bg, De, En, Fr, & Nl need polishing; all other langs need to be started (as of July 21).
  • Translation (this page) : Please translate the text of this page (except for the list of translators; just link back to #Translators by "A" language on this page), to improve exposure to multilingual Wikimedians who do not read English.
  • Press clippings : not quite translation per se; this page needs media quotes in many languages. Please migrate or copy quotes from local wikipedias here.

  • cy: has an "If you don't speak Welsh..." message which is planned to appear on its front page: . We're hoping to have this in as many languages as possible; if you can help, please drop by. 18:53, 25 Jul 2004 (UTC)
